What to do to prepare as you leave for your vacation or world travel.
Here are some helpful tips!

  • Here’s a comprehensive list of things a homeowner should do to prepare their house for a month-long absence:

  • Hold mail and newspaper delivery, or ask a neighbor to collect them.

  • Put lights on timers to make the home appear occupied.

  • Move vehicles into the garage (or at least out of sight).

  • Set your A/C or heating system to vacation mode or to a safe temperature (e.g., 55°F in winter).

  • Turn off the main water supply, or at least shut valves to appliances.

  • Unplug unnecessary electronics and appliances.

  • •Clean out the refrigerator of perishables and take out all trash.

  • •Store valuables in a safe or secure location.

  • •Arrange for plant watering and regular yard care.

  • •Close and lock all doors, windows, and set the alarm.

  • •Adjust blinds and curtains for security (closed or partly closed).

  • •Notify a trusted neighbor or friend and provide emergency contact details.

  • •Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

  • •Stop or forward package deliveries.

  • •Pay bills or set up automatic payments for utilities.

  • •If you have pets, make care arrangements

  • Clean and secure outdoor furniture and trim any trees/shrubs near the house.

  • Ensure thermostat settings won’t allow pipes to freeze or mold to develop.

  • If you’ll be gone in winter, winterize your home (insulate pipes, open cabinets).

  • Save a written checklist—use it again for next time!

  • Doing these steps will help keep your property secure and minimize risks or surprises while you’re away.

  • Wrap toilets: Place bleach or vinegar in your toilets and wrap with Saran Wrap, this will keep mold down to a minimum.

  • Optional: turn off your water heater, saves electric

  • Turn off the water to your icemaker.
